How to Find the Farmstead....Directions

If coming from Halifax on highway 101 - take take exit 10 Grand Pre and Wolfville. Travel towards Wolfville.

If coming from Yarmouth on highway 101 - take exit 11, Greenwich and Wolfville. Travel towards Wolfville.

In Wolfville turn onto Gaspereau Avenue across from Tim Horton's. Travel 3.6 kms up the hill, down into the Gaspereau Valley, over the bridge.

Turn RIGHT at the Shell Gas Station.
Travel 0.2 kms then turn RIGHT. Sign: Lumsden Dam.

Travel 9.4 kms along the river, past the ball field, up the hill, past the lake. At the upper end of the lake turn LEFT onto Davidson Street.

Travel 1.2 kms to 1877 Davidson Street - Nerida Heritage Farmstead.

History of the White Chantecler Chicken

Chanteclers were developed in Canada at the Oka Agricultural Institute in Quebec. The Chantecler breed is a result of two crosses: a Dark Cornish Rooster was bred with a White Leghorn and a Rhode Island Red rooster was bred with a White Whyandotte hen. The following year the Cornish x Leghorn pullets were bred with the Rhode Island Red x Whyandotte cockerels. Selected pullets from this cross were bred with White Plymouth Rock Roosters to create the foundation stock of the present day White Chantecler. The goal of the breeding was to develop a vigoroius "general purpose fowl", a good winter layer that could withstand the cold Canadian winters. Chanteclers have very small combs and wattles making them very cold resistant. They are hardy and suitable for both egg and meat production, they have a gentle temperment and good foragers. They were admitted to the Standard of Perfection in 1921.
Chanteclers have been categorized by Rare Breeds Canada as being "endangered" of becoming extinct.
